IPL Hair Removal
Before & after your treatment
A few simple steps help you get the best, longest-lasting results. Your therapist will tailor this advice to you on the day.
Before your appointment
- A free consultation is required before any IPL treatment, so we can check your skin and hair suit IPL.
- Shave the area 24 hours before. Don't wax, pluck or use hair-removal cream for 4 weeks beforehand, as IPL needs the hair root.
- Avoid sun exposure, sunbeds and fake tan on the area for 2 weeks before.
- Tell us about any medications, especially antibiotics, acne medication or retinoids, which can make skin more sensitive to light.
- Come with clean skin: no deodorant, moisturiser or makeup on the area.
After your appointment
- Mild redness, like a light sunburn, is normal for a few hours.
- Avoid heat (hot showers, saunas, the gym) for 24 to 48 hours.
- Apply Afterwax & IPL Lotion to soothe the area.
- Protect the area with SPF 50+ and avoid tanning for 2 weeks.
- Shave only between sessions. Treated hairs shed over 1 to 3 weeks, and gentle exfoliation helps them come away.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a consultation first?
Yes. Everyone needs a free consultation before having any IPL treatment, so we can check IPL is safe and suitable for your skin and hair.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients need a course of treatments, because IPL only treats hairs in the active growth phase. Your therapist will recommend a plan at your free consultation.
How often do I come in?
Usually every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the area. Face areas are treated more often than body areas.
Does IPL hurt?
Most people describe it as a warm flick, like a rubber band. Each pulse takes a split second.
Why do I need to shave instead of wax?
IPL targets the pigment in the hair root. Waxing or plucking removes the root, so there is nothing for the light to treat.
Does IPL work on all hair colours?
IPL works best on darker hair. It is not effective on white, grey, red or very fair hair. Your consultation checks your hair and skin tone.
Is IPL permanent?
IPL gives long-term hair reduction. Many clients see a big reduction after a full course, with occasional maintenance sessions.
