Fine Lines & Wrinkles

What causes aging, fine lines, and wrinkles?

As we get older, the production of collagen and elastin in the skin naturally slows down. This contributes to the loss of suppleness and elasticity. In short, older skin finds it harder to return to its normal state after damage, and as a result lines and wrinkles will gradually become more pronounced. Yes, everybody’s skin ages, but the rate at which it does so can depend on your job, lifestyle, diet, sun exposure and more.

Let’s take a closer look at ageing and uncover the factors behind fine lines and wrinkles.

Biological Ageing

Ageing is a natural process influenced by genetic factors and the passage of time. As we age, the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins for maintaining skin’s structure and elasticity, decreases. This leads to a gradual loss of firmness and resilience in the skin, resulting in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Facial Expressions

The repetitive movement of facial muscles, such as squinting, frowning, and smiling, can lead to the development of dynamic wrinkles over time. These wrinkles typically appear in areas where the skin is prone to folding, such as the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), and mouth (smile lines).

Sun Damage

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is one of the primary contributors to premature aging. UV rays penetrate the skin, triggering the production of free radicals that damage collagen and elastin fibres. This process, known as photoaging, accelerates the formation of wrinkles, sun spots, and uneven skin texture.

Lifestyle Choices

Our everyday habits can significantly impact the ageing process. Smoking, poor nutrition, excessive alcohol consumption, and inadequate sleep can all contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, making the skin more susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles.

Environmental Factors

Environmental stressors, such as pollution, harsh weather conditions, and exposure to toxins, can also take a toll on the skin. These factors promote inflammation and oxidative stress, accelerating the aging process and contributing to the formation of fine lines & wrinkles.
