Feeling a little nervous about your first wax? That’s completely normal, and you’re in good hands. Our therapists wax clients every day, and they’ll make sure you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in.
Whether you’re booking a quick lip wax or your very first Brazilian, here’s what to expect, how to prepare and the myths you can stop worrying about.
How to prepare for your first wax
A little preparation goes a long way towards a smoother, more comfortable wax.
- Check your hair length. Hair should be around 5 mm long, about the size of a grain of rice. This gives the wax enough to grip. If you’ve been shaving, let it grow for a couple of weeks first.
- Exfoliate 24 to 48 hours before. Gently exfoliating removes dead skin so the wax can grip the hair more easily. The Body Exfoliation Buff and Polish Mitt is ideal for this.
- Arrive with clean skin. A shower beforehand is all you need.
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing, especially for a bikini or Brazilian wax, so you’re comfortable on the way home.
What happens during your appointment
When you arrive, your therapist will have a quick chat about the area you’re having waxed and any questions you have. Let them know if you’re using any skincare or medications that may make your skin more sensitive, such as retinoids, so they can check waxing is suitable.
Your therapist will then leave the room so you can get ready. Our therapists are professional and focused, so there’s no need to feel self-conscious. If anything feels uncomfortable, just say so.
The wax is applied in small sections and removed quickly. Your therapist will work efficiently and talk you through each step. Once they’re finished, they’ll check for any stray hairs and run through your aftercare.
Strip wax or hot wax?
There are two main types of wax you’ll come across:
- Strip wax is spread thinly over the skin, then removed with a cloth strip.
- Hot wax is applied, left to set, then lifted off on its own without a strip.
For the bikini area, we offer both a Brazilian ($79) and a Hot Wax Brazilian ($95). Not sure which to choose? Ask your therapist and they’ll recommend the best option for your skin.
The Brazilian is one of the most popular waxes for good reason. Many people love the clean, low-maintenance feel, especially with Brisbane’s long, warm swimsuit season.
Common waxing myths, debunked
Myth: waxing makes hair grow back thicker.
Not true. Waxing removes hair from the root, and it doesn’t make it grow back thicker or darker.
Myth: you can’t wax during your period.
You can. Simply wear a tampon or menstrual cup for bikini and Brazilian waxes. Book whenever feels most comfortable for you.
Myth: the longer the hair, the better the wax.
Not true. Around 5 mm, about the size of a grain of rice, is all the wax needs to grip, so there’s no need to wait months between appointments.
Myth: once you start waxing, you can never shave again.
You can always choose what suits you. That said, waxing every 4 to 6 weeks keeps your hair at the right length for each appointment, so it’s easiest to stick to a regular routine.
Aftercare: looking after your skin
The first 24 hours are the most important. Your skin has just had hair removed from the follicle, so treat it gently.
- For the first 24 hours, avoid heat (hot showers, saunas and spas), the gym and tight clothing.
- Soothe your skin with the Afterwax & IPL Lotion ($30).
- Keep the area clean with the Antibacterial Body Wash (from $25).
- From day 3, start exfoliating gently with the Body Exfoliation Buff and Polish Mitt to help keep skin smooth.
Gentle, regular exfoliation can also help with ingrown hairs. If they’re something you deal with, read more on our ingrown hairs page or chat to your therapist at your next appointment.
How often should you wax?
Most clients book in every 4 to 6 weeks, with results lasting around 3 to 6 weeks. Staying on a regular schedule keeps your hair at the right length for each wax and makes your routine easy to manage.
Already thinking about longer-term hair reduction? Some clients move on to IPL hair removal later. Just remember you’ll need a free consultation first and no waxing for 4 weeks before your first IPL session.
