Imagine waking up with soft, even colour on your lips, no lipstick required. That’s the idea behind lip blush, a cosmetic tattoo treatment for anyone who’d love a little more definition and colour without reapplying all day.
If you’re curious, here’s everything you need to know, from your first consultation to how long your results last.
What is lip blush?
Lip blush is a cosmetic tattoo for your lips. Your artist gently places pigment into the lips to create a soft wash of colour. It can help even out lip tone, add colour to pale lips and give your lips a more defined shape.
The result is designed to look like your lips, just a little brighter and more polished. Your artist will help you choose a shade that suits your skin tone and the look you’re after, whether that’s a barely-there flush or something with a little more colour.
Lip blush is popular with people who:
- have pale or uneven lip colour
- feel their lip line has become less defined
- are tired of reapplying lipstick or lip liner through the day
- want a low-maintenance look for the gym, the beach and busy mornings
It starts with a free consultation
Every cosmetic tattoo treatment at Believe in Beautiful starts with a free consultation. It’s your chance to talk through the shade and shape you’d like, ask questions and make sure lip blush is right for you.
Your artist will also ask about your health history. A few things to know:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Cosmetic tattooing isn’t recommended while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, so it’s best to wait.
- Cold sores. If you’ve ever had a cold sore, mention it at your consultation. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before your appointment about cold sore prevention, as tattooing the lips can trigger a flare-up in people who are prone to them.
- Medications and skincare. Let your artist know about any medications and active skincare you use, so they can advise on what to pause and when.
Numbing cream for a more comfortable appointment
Lips are a sensitive area, so most clients use a topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) for comfort. Ours is supplied by our partner, Tugun Compounding Pharmacy. You order it directly through their topical anaesthetics form, so order it ahead of time and it will be ready for your appointment.
For more tips on getting ready for any cosmetic tattoo, read our guide to Feather Touch vs Powder Brows, which covers what to expect before and after a brow appointment too.
What happens on the day
Your appointment starts with your artist confirming the shape and shade you chose together at your consultation. You’ll agree on the shape together before any colour goes in, so there are no surprises.
Once your numbing cream has done its job, your artist gently applies the colour, checking in with you along the way. When it’s finished, you’ll see the result straight away, and your artist will talk you through exactly how to care for your lips at home.
It’s a good idea to plan a quiet day or two afterwards. Your lips will look bolder than the final result at first, so you may prefer to skip big events straight after your appointment.
Healing and aftercare
Straight after your appointment, your lips will look brighter and bolder than your final result. That’s completely normal. The colour softens as your lips heal.
As a guide:
- The surface heals in around 7 to 14 days.
- The colour settles over around 4 to 6 weeks, so try not to judge the result too early.
- Your perfection visit at 6 to 8 weeks is when your artist checks how the colour has settled and refines it where needed.
Your artist will give you aftercare instructions on the day, and following them closely is the best way to get an even, lasting result. Whatever you do, don’t pick at your lips while they heal. If anything concerns you during healing, contact your clinic and your artist will be happy to help.
How long does lip blush last?
Lip blush usually lasts around 1 to 3 years. How long yours lasts depends on your skin, your lifestyle and how you care for your lips. Protecting your lips from the sun can help the colour last longer.
As the colour gradually fades, a refresh visit tops it up and keeps your lips looking fresh.

- Any two initial visits: $999. For example, Lip Blush ($600) with Feather Touch Brows ($550) or Powder Brows ($550) would usually be $1,150, so you save $151.
- Any two perfection visits: $349, instead of $400 for two $200 perfection visits.
- Any three initial visits: $1,299. Add Eyelash Enhancer ($400) to lip blush and brows and you save $251 on the usual $1,550.
See all our options on the cosmetic tattooing page. Afterpay is available too.
While your lip blush takes care of itself, a Beauty Pass can look after the rest of your routine. You pay a set amount each month and get extra credit to spend on lashes and brows, waxing, IPL, spray tanning or massage. The Essential pass is $69 a month for $85 credit, with a 6-month minimum commitment.
