LED light therapy: how it helps breakouts, redness and glow

Believe in Beautiful Blog

LED light therapy is one of the most relaxing treatments on our menu. You lie back, close your eyes and let the light do the work. There’s no heat, no stinging and no downtime, which is why it’s a favourite with clients who want results without disrupting their day.

Here’s how LED works, what the different colours do, who should check with us first, and how it fits into a longer-term skin plan.

What is LED light therapy?

LED stands for light-emitting diode. In a professional LED treatment, a panel of lights is positioned over your face and set to a specific colour of light. Different colours are used for different skin concerns, so your therapist chooses the setting that best matches what your skin needs on the day.

At Believe in Beautiful, an LED treatment takes 40 minutes and costs $180. It’s painless and there’s no downtime, so you can go straight back to work, the school run or dinner plans afterwards.

Blue light vs red light

The two colours we talk about most are blue and red. Here’s a simple comparison:

Light What it’s used for Who it can suit
Blue light Helps with breakouts Oily, congested or breakout-prone skin
Red light Helps calm inflammation Red, irritated or reactive-looking skin, and skin that’s recovering after other treatments

Blue light for breakouts. If you’re dealing with regular breakouts, blue light can be a helpful part of your plan, alongside a consistent homecare routine. It pairs well with other treatments for congested skin, such as the Oily Skin Peel. You can read more in our guides to breakouts and acne and peels for oily, breakout-prone skin.

Red light to calm. Red light helps calm inflammation, which makes it a gentle choice when your skin is looking flushed, irritated or stressed. When skin is calmer, it tends to look healthier and more even, which is where that fresh glow comes from.

Who should check with us first

LED is gentle, but it isn’t right for everyone. It’s not suitable if you’re taking photosensitising medication, for example isotretinoin, which is sometimes prescribed for acne. Some other medications can also make skin more sensitive to light.

Before your appointment, let your therapist know about any medications you take, any retinoids or acids in your routine, and if you’re pregnant. If you’re not sure whether LED is right for you, book a free 20-minute Advanced Skin Consultation and we’ll talk it through.

Can LED be your whole skincare routine?

LED works best as one part of a bigger picture, not as a replacement for good daily habits. Think of it as a regular boost that supports what you do at home. A simple routine still matters:

  • Cleanse morning and night. The Rejuvenating Foaming Cleanser ($69) is oil-free, which many people with breakout-prone skin prefer. Keep it away from your eyes, as the label advises.
  • Treat with a serum suited to your concern. The Vitamin B3 Complex ($89) or Barrier Hydration Complex ($99) are two options to ask about. Your therapist can recommend the right one for you.
  • Protect with SPF 50+ every day.

You’ll find our full Australian Skin Institute range in the online shop, with free Australian delivery on orders over $150.

LED as part of a Radiance Skin Treatment

LED is also one of the modalities your therapist can choose during a Radiance Skin Treatment ($180, 40 minutes). This restorative, hydrating treatment is tailored on the day, so your therapist might choose LED, microcurrent, a peel or a Hydro Jelly mask depending on how your skin is behaving.

If you’re new to Believe in Beautiful, the Skin Discovery Treatment is a great place to start. It’s $99 for new clients (usually $180) and includes a consultation, an in-depth skin assessment, a Dermal Face Lift Mask, one targeted modality and a homecare plan. Read more in our guide to your first Skin Discovery Treatment.
